RemotePC: Best for Easy Implementation

Plans are easy to implement, use and scale.
RemotePC charges a flat rate that allows users to conduct unlimited concurrent sessions.
24/7 email and instant chat support are only available with certain plans.

For businesses needing a comprehensive solution that is easy to implement and access, we recommend RemotePC by IDrive. The company offers a variety of plans, each with extensive features and flat annual rates, which makes choosing a plan a breeze. RemotePC is easily scalable.

Pricing

RemotePC has four standard remote access plans (Consumer, SOHO, Team and Enterprise), one remote support plan (HelpDesk) and one video conferencing plan (Meeting). The remote access plans are tiered based on the number of users and computers you need secure access to. Each paid plan costs a flat annual rate, and prices range from $29.50 per user to $499.50 for the Enterprise plan, which supports unlimited users and access to 100 computers. Businesses can scale the Team and Enterprise plans to cover 100, 200, 300, 500 or 1,000 computers for an additional fee. RemotePC has previously offered significant first-year discounts and student discounts; inquire if these discounts still apply when you call them.

The HelpDesk plan differs from the other plans in that it is primarily geared toward IT users. Your company's IT techs can access an unlimited number of computers, and the plan is set up to support on-demand IT requests and troubleshooting. It costs $499.50 per year; again, RemotePC offers a significant discount if this is your company's first year using the solution.

September 2020: RemotePC recently changed its free trial policy. You can now test RemotePC's Team, Enterprise or HelpDesk plans for free for 7 days – no credit card required. The Consumer and Soho plans are not eligible for the free trial.

Features

Although RemotePC access features are tiered, every remote access plan includes essential remote desktop tools like drag-and-drop file transfer, remote printing, video conferencing, session recording, and collaboration capabilities (e.g., text chat, voice, augmented reality video, interactive annotation). Enterprise plans have advanced capabilities like computer grouping, deployment, group organization, and user role and permission capabilities.

August 2020: RemotePC is simplifying remote communication even more with its new video conferencing feature, RemotePC Meeting. Users can access built-in collaboration tools like group and private messaging, dial-in via phone, screen sharing, session recording, a whiteboard, and unlimited video conferencing. RemotePC Meeting is free with every RemotePC plan, and it is accessible via online browsers, the App Store, and Google Play Store.

Security

RemotePC has an easy-to-use web browser interface, and it only requires installation if you are using the platform for unattended access. Your devices connect via TLS v 1.2/AES-256 encryption, and they work over the internet, LAN, and firewall/proxy servers. The two-factor authentication is quick to set up, and it includes an access ID and a unique password. There is also an option to blank the screen of the remote device for extra privacy with the click of a button. RemotePC is compatible with Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS and Android devices.

Customer Support

If you have questions about the tools, the RemotePC home page has video tutorials, FAQs and a blog. Team and Enterprise plans have access to 24/7 email and chat support. We tested RemotePC's customer service and were very pleased with the fast help we received from knowledgeable representatives.

ISL Online: Featured Sponsor

ISL Online's professional and secure remote desktop software allows users to access and support computers and mobile devices from anywhere. The cross-platform software is available as a cloud, on-premises or combined license solution. ISL Online is easy to use; users can transfer files, record sessions, manage multiple monitors, transfer a session to another user, install new software and reboot computers. Its security features include two-factor authentication, integrations with external authentication services, AES 256-bit end-to-end encryption, exportable audit logs and automatic session recording. There are multiple service plans to choose from. Business plans start at $145 per year for a 500-minute pay-per-use coupon. One cloud license, which allows you to run one simultaneous remote session at a time, costs $469 per year. Unlimited simultaneous session plans are available.

Zoho Assist: Best for Small Business

Zoho's plans are designed specifically for small and midsized businesses: They are all affordable and comprehensive.
Unattended access plans use a LAN connection to "wake up" remote computers and shut them down.
File transfers exceeding 2GB may experience a lag, or the data may need to be broken up.

Zoho Assist is the best overall remote PC access software solution for small businesses because of its comprehensive features and affordable plans. The software is ideal for employees needing to access their office computers while working remotely, and it's a good solution for IT departments that troubleshoot internal computers.

Pricing

Zoho offers multiple pay-as-you-go remote software plans, including a free plan for personal or commercial use, two unattended access plans (Standard and Professional) and three remote support plans (Standard, Professional and Enterprise). Zoho offers a 15-day free trial, and you can change or cancel your service at any time. Plans range in price from $8 to $25 per technician, per month and the number of available concurrent sessions. (Zoho's Standard plan comes with two sessions; the Professional plan comes with six.) Volume discounts are available.

Both of Zoho's unattended access plans support up to 25 computers and cost $10 to $15 per month. (The Professional plan, though, offers expanded features like session recording, remote print, voice and video chat, and mass deployment to name just a few of the enhanced features.) You save $2 per month if you pay for a year in advance.

Features

Remote Support features include file transfer, multimonitor navigation, screen capture, reboot and reconnect and custom reporting. The advanced plans have expanded features, such as screen sharing, session scheduling and auditing, the ability to annotate the screen, and voice and video chat.

Zoho's Unattended Access plans come with essential features like computer grouping, group permissions, file transfer, bulk deployment, wake-on LAN, remote power options, multimonitor navigation, screen capture and custom reporting. The Professional plan has advanced features like session recording, remote printing, voice and video chat, custom domain mapping, and it supports mobile and IoT devices.

Zoho Assist integrates with other Zoho programs and third-party applications, including G Suite, Spiceworks and Zendesk. You can also develop custom apps using API integration, which can connect Zoho Assist with Kiosk, Android and iOS apps, OEM devices, and ITSM or CRM solutions.

Security

Zoho Assist is cloud-based, which allows your business to seamlessly interact with remote computers through a downloadable plugin link. All data is transmitted with end-to-end SSL and AES 256-bit encryption. Transferring files is as easy as dragging and dropping a document from one computer to the other; however, we recommend that the size of the files you plan to transfer should not exceed 2GB – otherwise, there is too much of a lag. Another option is to break up the files into separate transfers or use another method that better supports installing large files. Cross-platform access is secure across various devices, including Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Mac, iOS and Android.

Customer Support

Zoho offers several helpful online resources, including free training, FAQs, a user guide and user forums. When we reached out to Zoho customer support, the staff was very knowledgeable and offered detailed information about the platform and its plans.

ConnectWise Control: Best for Cross-Platform Access

Plans feature high-end security settings, such as role-based security, secure session codes, LDAP and SAML integration, brute force protection, access revocation and OAuth integration.
Plans, features, security measures and branding are customizable.
Initially connecting devices can be challenging since you must first build and then customize your installer agent.

ConnectWise Control, previously ScreenConnect, performs well on every platform, whether you are connecting via PC, Mac or tablet. The software is very customizable, though it may require advanced technical know-how for users. However, once a remote access session has started, the software is fast and efficient.

Pricing

ConnectWise offers one remote access-only plan (Access) and three remote support plans (One, Standard and Premium). Pricing for the Access plan is based on the number of unattended access agents you need (basically the number of devices you need unattended access for) and starts at $30 per month for 25 unattended access agents. The support plans are concurrent session-based, ranging from $19 per month (paid annually) for the One plan to $45 per month for the Premium plan. ConnectWise has a 14-day free trial.

Features

ConnectWise Control is installation-based software that is accessible via a link or installer package. This enables you to connect several platforms, including Windows, Linux, Mac, Chrome OS, iOS and Android devices. When you are connected, you can drag and drop files or copy and paste documents between devices. Features vary depending on the plan you sign up for but can include text chat, VoIP, annotation, a shared toolbox, remote printing, monitor blanking and multiple monitor support. You can integrate other options like surveys, extensions, and ConnectWise View.

Security

ConnectWise Control is bolstered with AES 256-bit encryption and two-factor authentication. Other security and authentication features include role-based security, secure session codes, LDAP and SAML integration, brute force protection, access revocation and OAuth integration.

Customer Support

ConnectWise offers webinars, demos and video tutorials to help users master all of the features of the software. There is also a downloadable chat feature and a customer support line where you can speak directly with a ConnectWise representative.

TeamViewer: Best for Mac

TeamViewer can be used with other software solutions (e.g., Salesforce, Zendesk, Microsoft Intune, IBM MaaS360 and MobileIron).
Mobile support costs extra.

TeamViewer is our pick as the best secure, convenient remote Mac access solution. Employees and IT teams can access remote computers, servers, mobile devices, all with a sense of security and privacy.

Pricing

TeamViewer offers three licenses; each is billed annually. The Single User plan (one seat, one session) costs $50.90 per month. The Multi-User plan comes with multiple user licenses (with one session running at a time) and all of the remote features you will likely need for $102.90 per month. The Team plan comes with multiple user licenses, three concurrent sessions and extended remote features for $206.90 per month. You can purchase add-on tools like TeamViewer Remote Management, mobile device support, TeamViewer Pilot and extra concurrent users. TeamViewer has a 15-day free trial.

February 2021: TeamViewer recognizes the need for end-to-end encrypted video conferencing and screen-sharing solutions. The company announced that TeamViewer Meeting video conferencing capabilities are now automatically available to TeamViewer clients for free. Previously, it was only available as a stand-alone subscription offering.

Features

TeamViewer offers the convenience of being both cloud-based and installable, which should make it easy to implement for your employees. With necessary features like drag-and-drop file transfer, text chat, VoIP and video, communicating between devices is simple. Other features include remote printing,  user and device access reporting, mass deployment and software integrations.

December 2020: In November 2020, Apple announced the transition from Intel chips to newly developed Apple Silicon chips. According to Apple, the new chips will "deliver industry-leading performance and powerful new technologies." The full transition to the new chips is expected to take up to two years.

To support remote access users in this transition, TeamViewer released TeamViewer 15.12 for MacOS. This latest version supports the Apple Silicon structure and the new macOS Big Sur. According to  TeamViewer, the new version allows for remote connectivity with improved performance and less energy consumption.

Security

TeamViewer uses AES 256-bit encryption, two-factor authentication, user and IP whitelisting, and brute force protection. Remote data backup and remote device monitoring are secure from end to end, and the software looks for unusual behavior, such as access from a new location. If it detects suspicious activity, it safeguards your data by forcing a password reset. ConnectWise is SOC2 certified and compliant, HIPAA compliant and ISO 27001 certified for Information Security Management.

Customer Support

TeamViewer has an extensive knowledgebase; there you can read "Get Started" guides or post your question or concern to the community. If you don't get an answer there, you can call TeamViewer or submit a help ticket.

Remote PC Access Software Pricing and Negotiation

Choosing the right remote PC access software is complex and challenging. Most companies offer multiple plans (with either a flat annual or monthly rate based on the number of users or licenses you need), which can make it difficult to determine which solution will give you the most bang for your buck.

Knowing how many computers, users, and concurrent sessions you need access for, as well as your budget, will help you quickly zero in on the company and plan best suited for your business. Another thing to keep in mind is that some companies charge separately for features like unattended and mobile device access. Be sure to factor in additional fees like these into your budget.

As you evaluate remote PC access software solutions, ask the company questions related to the topics below to help ensure you get a good deal:

  • Free trials or special discounts: Many providers run promotions and discounts. They are often flexible with their pricing too. Right now, many providers are offering extended trials for businesses affected by the coronavirus. Don't hesitate to inquire about what other discounts your business may qualify for.

  • Fees: Some providers charge extra for additional users or mobile device access. Ask the companies you're strongly considering for a breakdown of all their additional fees.

  • Single-license limitations: If you want to purchase a single license, carefully compare the specific features in that plan with those in other single-license plans offered by other remote PC access providers. Single-user plans often have limited features compared to multiuser business plans.

  • Software upgrades or downgrades: Some companies offer prorated prices if you need to upgrade your plan, while others do not. Some plans make downgrading a simple online process, whereas others have specific requirements for it, such as mailing or calling the company.

  • Updates: Most software platforms automatically update your plan as new technology rolls out. Some, though, may require you to upgrade your account to be compatible with these updated features. If you buy the software outright instead of signing up for a subscription, you may have to pay for updates.

Most companies are transparent about their cost structures and plan details. Carefully review the agreement. Finally, make sure the contract has a clear cancellation policy and there aren't built-in price increases.

Buying Guide

What Is Remote PC Access Software, and How Does It Work?

Remote PC access software allows one computer to remotely connect and access another device, regardless of where both devices are physically located. Remote PC access software is commonly used among IT departments that need to remotely access company devices and deploy necessary installations and configurations. It is also used by businesses that want to provide their team or customers with remote support and virtual help desk capabilities, as well as employees who need to remotely access office devices when they are working offsite.

Connecting two devices (e.g., PC, Mac, iOS, Android) will depend on the software you are using. While some applications require you to install the software on one or both devices first before making a connection, other software is web-based and allows you to connect multiple devices via a web browser. Depending on the software and plan you purchase, the remote device may have to be turned on before you can make a connection; however, some software programs remotely "wake up" devices before accessing them.

The best remote PC access software comes with essential security settings that allow you to restrict user access; these security features include two-factor authentication, secure session codes, role-based security and brute force protection.

Once you remotely connect to a device and have permission to access and manipulate its contents, most remote PC access software allows you to easily drag and drop or copy and paste files from one device to the other. There are often chat capabilities and remote functions like remote printing or recording.

Is Remote PC Access Safe and Secure?

If you can access your work computer from home, is someone else able to as well?

All of the software solutions we evaluated go to great lengths to ensure security. Each software program lets you customize the security settings for your remote session. These features typically include blanking the screen of the host machine while you access it, locking the keyboard and mouse, and automatically disconnecting if the session is inactive for too long. You can adjust these features and create or change credentials.

Secure transmissions are a must when you're remotely accessing another computer, especially when sensitive or proprietary information is involved. The industry standard is 128-bit encryption; many software providers offer 256-bit AES encryption. Both encryption methods offer robust security. Further, many remote PC access solutions comply with industry and government standards and regulations, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Payment Card Industry (PCI) and Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements (SSAE) 16.

Passwords are a given for remote PC access software; many companies offer a second layer of security, such as IP filtering. IP filtering blocks access from specific computers, even if a valid password is used. This feature is particularly helpful in blocking access to unauthorized information.

What Can Remote PC Access Software Do for Me?

Whether your business has ordered its employees to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic or your IT department needs a software solution to remotely control and troubleshoot devices, remote access is a key component of many businesses.

Many platforms offer a host of convenient features, such as desktop shortcuts and drag-and-drop file transfers, to easily access and transfer information. This makes it easier than ever to quickly reach an office computer from a desktop or mobile device – you can access your work computer from anywhere on your personal devices.

This software is especially ideal for IT work. IT staff can remotely connect to verified computers to update programs or troubleshoot connection problems. Many of the programs we evaluated are multifunctional enough to suit a business's IT department while remaining simple enough for general employee use. Some of the programs even allow for web conferencing and whiteboard chatting, which can be used for demos, classes or group projects. The video recording feature on most remote software allows you to record these sessions for future viewing.

Remote PC Access Features

Below is a roundup of the features that remote access solutions offer. Many companies tier the features, only offering comprehensive features to higher-tiered plans. Carefully review plans and take advantage of the free trial to make sure the plan includes the features you need.

  • Always-on remote access: Configure devices for remote access at any time. You can see a list of devices that are configured for remote access and their current statuses (e.g., all computers, in session, online, offline).

  • Browser-based vs. installation: Access devices remotely via a web browser-based link, software installation or both.

  • Communication: Communicate between devices using text chat, VoIP, video, annotation, whiteboards and screenshots.

  • Cross-platform access: Access desktop platforms – Windows, Linux, Mac, Chrome OS and Raspberry Pi – and mobile devices – iOS, Android, Windows mobile and Blackberry. Some software limits the type of platforms it can connect to.

  • Integration: Integrate the software with other business applications you use, such as G Suite, Zendesk, Jira and more. This is great for simplifying business processes.

  • Logs and reporting: Track your remote access and web activity in easy-to-read logs and reports.

  • Multiple monitor support: View multiple monitors on a remote computer.

  • One-time instant access: Permit one-time access to a device using a unique access ID and key.

  • Remote printing: Print from a device that you are accessing remotely.

  • Scalability: Add or remove devices from your plan with ease.

  • Session scheduling and recording: Schedule remote access sessions and record the activity that takes place.

Remote Desktop Software FAQs

Q: Who needs remote PC access software?

A: Remote PC access software is great for a number of business users. Employees who are working from home and want to access their office computers can use it, as can companies or educators who need to remotely teach multiple students simultaneously. It is also ideal for IT departments that need to access office devices, troubleshoot tech issues and deploy various technology protocols. Support agents and help desks use remote PC access software to remotely aid people experiencing technical issues or glitches.

Q: What should you look for in a remote access solution?

A: The solution best suited for your business is going to hinge on your company and what you need from the software. For example, one business might prioritize collaboration features, whereas another might be focused on user management. In addition to your must-have features, consider usability, compatibility, security and customer support.

You want to be sure the software is compatible with all of your devices and secure enough to safely transmit information. The level of usability depends on how advanced your team is – do they have extensive technical knowledge, or do they need a simple user interface? You also want to be sure the software you choose is backed with solid customer support so your questions and concerns can be quickly and efficiently addressed.

Q: How does remote access software increase productivity?

A: Remote access and support software can increase productivity in more ways than one. For example, having the ability to access an office desktop via various devices allows you or your workers to edit, manage and submit essential documents outside of the office. This is especially helpful for companies who have workforces working at home.

Another advantage is technical support. If someone on your team runs into a technical problem, they can lose several hours of productivity attempting to fix it themselves. Using a remote access software solution, an IT support tech can quickly access and troubleshoot their device.

Q: What are the advantages of customizable security settings?

A: Security is one of the most important features of remote PC access software, especially for those who work in highly regulated industries. Although most software solutions offer encryption and other security measures to safely transmit data, some offer customizable security settings. This is advantageous for companies whose employees work with several individuals on one platform. Having the ability to create role-based security measures, and manage and restrict specific user access helps your business safely manage your team and/or customers. Customizing security settings is also helpful when working with varying levels of information.

Q: Is it safe to use remote desktop software on public Wi-Fi?

A: Not really. Users always run a security risk when accessing a shared public Wi-Fi, especially if they have no other security measures in place. For example, if you are connecting to a public Wi-Fi, you are most likely connecting to an open port on a firewall – which is not safe. Open ports leave you vulnerable to attackers who can see where your RDP connection is hosted. Although you may be fairly secure to trivial attacks, always implement additional security measures when using remote access software on public Wi-Fi, like using a virtual private network.

Q: What are some risks with using remote PC access software?

A: Remote PC access software often comes with a variety of security features to keep your network and devices safe, but that's not to say that using the software is without some risk. Remote access software can be accessed or installed on virtually any device, which means your business isn't only on the hook for monitoring in-office devices for security threats – you will need to keep an eye on every employee device that uses the remote software to ensure it has sufficient security software.

If your employees use remote access software to connect their business and personal devices, you also run the risk of them mixing their business and personal passwords. If your team doesn't follow strong password protocol and use multifactor authentication, this may leave your system vulnerable to cyberthreats. Additionally, since remote access software connects a variety of devices, one hacked device can leave your company at risk of security breach. To avoid these dangers, it is important to maintain strict security protocols, such as allowing users to access necessary devices and enforcing user-identity verification.

Q: How can you protect your computer when using remote access?

A: You can employ several business security best practices to protect your devices while using remote access software. Some of the most basic – yet effective – actions are using strong passwords and two-factor authentication, implementing firewalls to restrict access, setting an account lockout policy, limiting which users can log on to the remote desktop software, and updating software frequently. You should make sure that anyone connected to your business's remote access software is taking these security measures.

Community Expert Insight

We interviewed small business owners to gain real-world insight into which software they use. Ease of use was mentioned by many as a top priority.

Malte Scholz, CEO and co-founder of Airfocus, uses TeamViewer to help customers set up his company's app. He listed ease of use as his team's top priority for remote PC access software.

"We love the fact that the user interface is so nice and that the app is overall incredibly easy to use," Scholz told business.com. "It doesn't take a lot of time to set up, and you can get going within 20 minutes from first trying out the app."

Aqsa Tabassam, entrepreneur and editor-in-chief of InsideTechWorld, said her team uses Zoho Assist to work remotely and manage technical glitches. In addition to the usability of on-demand connections, they love Zoho's auto-detection capabilities.

"The software comes with a great set of features, but what's more amazing … is that it auto detects the multiple monitors used, displays them with preference, and records their performance based on function, location and other relative parameters," Tabassam said. "It also detects basic troubleshooting during the connection … Zoho tries to resolve all the problems automatically with ease."

Easily scaling the software is another key featured that small business owners cited. Veronica Miller, marketing manager at VPN Overview, said her team loves that their RemotePC plan was easily scalable.

"It needs no additional software or hardware to add more computers to our plan," said Miller. "Without any other resources, we can expand it. So, it does not disturb our workflow or does not cause any hindrance."

Remote PC Access Software Review Methodology

We started our research by evaluating nearly two dozen vendors. After some preliminary research into each program, we settled on 15 remote PC access software options to consider as best picks: AnyDesk, Anyplace Control, BeyondTrust, ConnectWise Control, GoToMyPC, LogMeIn, NoMachine, Radmin, Remote Utilities, RemotePC, ShowMyPC, Splashtop, TeamViewer, VNC Connect and Zoho Assist.

Next, we evaluated each software solution on a more in-depth scale. We looked at company websites and online resources to evaluate the functionality and sharing features available, as well as the general usability of each program. We spoke with several small business owners about the software they used and the features that matter the most to them.

After narrowing down the list to the top contenders, we created a list of essential features for each use case (best for easy implementation, best for small business, best Mac solution) and then ranked each program based on those necessary features. Before finalizing our best picks, we posed as small business owners and contacted each company to evaluate its customer service.

We analyzed each program based on the following criteria:

  • Browser-based vs. installation
  • Communication features
  • Compliance
  • Cross-platform access
  • Customer support
  • Integration
  • Logs and reporting
  • Scalability
  • Security
  • Session scheduling and recording
  • Usability

What to Expect in 2020

Technology is evolving at a rapid rate, and software companies are following suit. Most small business owners (and their employees) use various mobile devices as a primary means of doing business. As a result, more remote access software solutions support smartphone and tablet devices with their applications. This will be especially beneficial for users who conduct business away from their office computers.

Due to the unexpected coronavirus pandemic, early 2020 has brought an influx of remote PC access users. Although many businesses will return to their offices after the pandemic is over, some companies may keep remote access software as a permanent integration. Because of this, we anticipate the remote PC access software industry to expand their features to adapt to the needs of remote workers.

Digital security is important now more than ever, and since users are remotely accessing devices from various locations and servers, it is important that their information is secure. Users can expect to see increased security measures implemented with remote access software solutions this year as well.
